Anyone who's made it through an Indiana winter knows how deep you get stuck in your own head. You wake up in the dark and scrape ice off your windshield for 10 minutes and you just sort of burrow inside yourself. On her debut album Dark Energy, Gary, Ind. footwork producer Jlin—whose "Erotic Heat" was one of the most intriguing cuts off Planet Mu's Bangs & Works Vol. 2 compiltion back in 2011—sounds like someone well accustomed to prolonged introspection. Where footwork often draws from the outside in, manipulating samples into submission, Jlin's work seems to pull from deep within a restless mind. "Unknown Tongues" makes a little go a long way: not much more than chants and drums, braided together in an intricate, untieable knot. It's visceral enough for the club, but somehow it feels better alone.-=-=-=-
