"Flyin' Low, Maria" opens Olympia, Wash., band Gun Outfit's third album, Hard Coming Down, out April 2 on PPM, the label run by No Age drummer Dean Spunt. Like their associates in Milk Music, the Dylan Sharp and Carrie Keith-fronted quartet use 80s SST and the 90s Pacific Northwest as their base and then run with it (though Gun Outfit nod as much to lo-fi K Records "love rock" band Some Velvet Sidewalk as they do the Wipers). You might not expect it after listening to the Keith-sung "Flyin' Low", but Hard Coming's a darker, mellower, more spacious record than the group's previous work.
