After a quiet 2025, Chase & Status return with album that gives what 2RUFF was empty handed in
Being a long time Chase & Status fan since the release of No More Idols, I find myself constantly expecting all new releases to top or be as good as their old stuff, but I found I've been over-expecting and had to put down those expectations for Generic Everything as this record is purposefully its own personality - shifting away from those old tropes.
And, to say the least, I was pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of their latest album.
Filled from top to bottom with bangers (with the exceptions of a couple hearty gems that get you in the feels), nearly every song in Generic Everything knows what it wants to be and where it wants to go and I really really like that, as I found that 2RUFF struggled to do that especially in the second half and left me more than underwhelmed.
It's nice to see them sort of going back to the their roots with tracks like 'Tension', 'Carnage', and 'Gone Too Far' which feel straight out of No More Idols with that authentic, raw feel that give that flair to them (unlike Timber and Juggin' which to me just feel... Generic - pun not intended).
The Skrillex collab feels very different for both artists, being a more minimalistic Brazilian bop that definitely takes the two out of their comfort zone while still keeping uniquely to their styles.
My favourite track is 'Influence' and I don't have much to say about it other than that it is magnificent in all aspects, especially Ledbyher's vocals which are stunning all thorughout. The same could be said about Debbie's vocal talent in the track thereafter too.
Top 3 Standouts:
- Influence
- Carnage
- Gone Too Far
Worst Tracks:
- Juggin'
- Timber
Favourite Lyric:
“I'm on all kinds of fuckery, biscuit for everybody”
