The pairing of Powell and Jaime Williams’ Diagonal label with Providence, R.I.’s Ren Schofield—otherwise known as the fuzz-besotted beatmaker Container—is so intuitive, you wonder why it hasn't happened sooner. Both Diagonal and Container specialize in a kind of knuckle-dragging proto-techno bashed out on rudimentary analog setups and run through corrosive distortion; both treat dance music and noise as fundamentally inseparable from one another.

“Insulation” is the closing track off Container’s new Vegetation EP for Diagonal, and it’s as heavy as anything he's ever done. It boasts fat, concussive kick drums, and the distortion on his synths is so rough, a single blast could probably strip the fur off small mammals. It’s not just pummeling; it's tricky, too, knotted up in strange syncopations that keep pulling the rug out from underneath you. The overall effect is a little bit like the great Finnish noiseniks Pan Sonic reconfigured for American headbangers; it's the sound of electrical circuits in a very bad mood.
