Natalie Mering, better known by her alter ego, Weyes Blood, is a master of melodramatic pause. One minute she’s crooning and has you calmly contemplating the beauty of a twinkling piano, and the next those very keys have become a conduit of pain as she bellows behind them. "Some Winters" begins innocently enough: an autumnal piano melody wavers in, soon quivering into distortion with echoes summoned from purgatory. Here, the multi-instrumentalist contorts her malleable voice into frequencies not of this earth, musing on how everything we know is so fickle and fragile: "The house of stone we built/ Has turned to sand." But Mering makes us want to believe we can find meaning in the most fleeting places.
