German producer Roman Flügel began his last EP with a flurry of chopped up samples from African records and ended it with a Cluster-like synth stew. So it's actually a bit of an upset to see him trying his hand at a straight-down-the-middle tech-y house jam. "Teenage Engineering" (perhaps named after the trè chic Stockholm synthesizer company?) opens Monday Brain, his first release on the popular Hypercolour label. He maintains a light touch throughout, building on a shuffling percussion loop and a little curl of a bassline. A sparkling synth lead winds the track upwards, but Flügel opts to trade his hands-in-the-air release for a few bars of quiet contemplation as he resettles the track into valleys of soft piano notes. Flügel's deft hand takes all the elements of a house anthem and turns them into a simple sigh.
