Seattle musician Norm Chambers has cited “library music”-- generic “mood” music made for TV and radio in the 1960s to the '80s-- as an inspiration behind his prolific solo project Panabrite. You can hear that influence in his retro-synth strains, but Chambers’ work has a lot more character and range, touching also on 70’s Komische explorations and sparkly New Age zone-outs.

His approach deepens further on forthcoming cassette Cortex Meridian, perhaps his most varied release yet. Closer “Abyssal II” is a nice sampler of his diverse talents, drifting from airy drone to slow casio beats to a cloud of synth waves and vocoder-tinted vocals. The track is deceptively simple, lulling you into a false sense of stasis. But by the time “Abyssal II” descends into ghostly trails, Chambers’ meditative motions have traveled a pretty fair distance.
