"Sunset" was one of the highlights of last year's fine xx record Coexist, anchored by a muted 4/4 throb that afforded vocalists Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim plenty of space for one of their trademark lovelorn duets. In the hands of former Hercules and Love Affair member Kim Ann Foxman, that simple thump is blown up and made appropriate for a dimly lit club. But Foxman has a keen dynamic ear, and she shies away from rendering Croft and Sim twin house divas. Instead, their dialogue is turned into the sort that takes place in a quiet corner of the dance floor, a pained conversation steeped in regret tucked underneath the churning beat.
