Sylvain Chauveau is a Belgian-based French composer whose music occupies the twilit area where downbeat, muted experimental electronic music melts into downbeat, muted chamber music. “Situation Finale,” a miniature for cello, oboe, and piano off of his upcoming collection Simple (Rare and Unreleased Pieces 1998-2010) (out November 5 via FatCat), works in this wistful-postcard style. There’s not much in terms of dramatic movement-- just a few watery flurries on piano soft-pedaled for maximum melancholy, a sighing cello tracing figures above it, and a single ember of clarinet glowing softly in the distance like a foghorn.
