Brooklyn trio Occultation features multi-instrumentalist E.M.M., aka Nameless Void, the mastermind behind the suffocatingly beautiful black metal act Negative Plane; the group's debutThree & Seven, out April 17 via Profound Lore, includes that sort of melted-wax atmosphere, but instead of ghostly howls, we get the rich vocals of V.B. floating over eerie organs and dark, twisted progressive leads. As "Living Portrait" suggests, the group works within a classic metal style-- one that brings to mind early Mercyful Fate-- while showing an allegiance to a more warped modern cult underground.
