The London-based musician Josef Page started his solo-project FAUX as a way to mine his love for 1980s pop music, and his adoration of the era’s greatest songbirds, from Prince to Tina Turner, is not just fanatic but scholarly. FAUX’s debut single, “Take Back Time,” with the UK soul singer Sherry Davis, is a thoughtful piece of retro pop that balances technical acumen with just the right amount of nostalgia. In particular, Page’s sleek production of sensual keyboards, plush woodblocks, and snappy drums is pumped-up and full of hi-fi energy. Meanwhile, Davis channels old-school divas, pairing heartfelt lyrics about love and loss with an enthusiastic delivery worthy of a Pointer Sisters party jam. On the bellowing chorus—“If I could change the clock and turn in back to yesterday”—there is a careful balance between Page’s throwback production and Davis’ unabashedly upbeat mood that doesn’t slide into cheesy pastiche. “Take Back Time” is an even-keeled and skillfully crafted homage to ‘80s gloss.
