The band is fronted by ex-Men screamer Chris Hansell

Chris Hansell is probably best known as the former screamer in the Men (responsible for the most exciting moments on 2011’s Leave Home). He’s the frontman of New York hardcore outfit Warthog, and on “Culture?” from their upcoming self-titled EP, he is the unhinged voice pointing out the obvious: the masses blindly follow what’s placed in front of them. Social media feeds cater to individual tastes by funneling information through algorithms; unwelcome opinions are easily blocked. “Is this culture? Is this culture? Following what only they see.”

This is unrelenting, pummeling hardcore that refers to propaganda as “filth” or “disease.” Even Hansell’s detail work is crucial, like something as simple as a well-placed, spat-out “UNH.” “Culture?” shakes you awake—it implores you to look around and see that there’s more to life than what your friends, computer, and phone are telling you.
