The recent rap collab tape trend continues with Quavo and Travis Scott’s Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho, a largely uneven but nonetheless attractive release. It’s easy to question the purpose of this side venture: Their skill sets don’t naturally complement each other, and they have a somewhat forced chemistry. But then there’s “Saint Laurent Mask,” easily one of the prettiest rap orchestrations of 2017.

Produced by Buddah Bless and Mike Dean, the track’s instrumental is a gorgeous array of celestial chimes and hums, carefully synthesized, and lathered in reverb. Each note here glows with the warmth of a pastel. It doesn’t even matter that the song’s lyrics are mostly clunky (“Put a drop in my sweet tea/X-rated, no PG” Scott clumsily raps at one point”). Quavo and Scott’s Auto-Tuned voices merely serve as additional instruments, bringing colorful layers and richer textures. “Saint Laurent Mask” builds meticulously to its finish, where Quavo’s bridge and refrain introduce a new, reed-like melody that crescendos before descending back into the arrangement, revealing itself as a synth. As Quavo’s voice evaporates, the fuzzy synth solo bleeds into a beautiful collection of bells. Too often, rappers must be nuclei; sometimes they make for wonderful window-dressing.
