When Fresh & Onlys' guitarist Wymond Miles goes solo, he uses his breathy, warbling voice to deliver sweeping melodrama. On "Passion Plays", the A-side of his forthcoming 7", he does it again, achieving the same atmosphere he established on Under the Pale Moon. "If I had words, what could I say," he asks, seemingly pained, over an electric guitar's mood-establishing minor chord. But his relatively quiet instrumental slowly gains traction with more robust percussion and a dynamic bass groove. This is how you craft a mascara-caked post-punk song about heartache-- with a rhythm section that's got soul and crashing intensity. It's a track that's consistently compelling and completely tight-- hopefully an omen for what Miles has in store for his next LP.
