"Arjuna" is sequenced at the middle of Half Blood, Horseback's proper followup to 2009's The Invisible Mountain, a seven-song collection out May 8 on Relapse. The track finds mastermind Jenks Miller recasting his blackened Americana as moody, sturdy post-rock complete with clean/grim vocal harmonizing. It appears after a fuzzy seven-minute drift and before a series of drone pieces with "Hallucigenia" in their titles, three peyote-drenched closers reminiscent of the free-form moments on Miller's collaboration with fellow Southern metal experimentalists Pyramids (recast by an early-90s Slint-related project). If you didn't know where "Arjuna" landed, though, the song still feels like what it is, a bridge to a looser, more open-ended headspace.
