Dave B. is a Seattle MC whose nasally voice is an instrument of its own, crackling and humming and naturally melodic. The 25-year-old rapper’s best songs, like “Kandi,” deliver vocal acrobatics and joyful gospel harmonies as they offer glimpses into the life of an adrift twenty-something.

On “Scrolling”—a stripped-down, organ-laced highlight from his new album Pearl—Dave complains about the lack of authenticity in the digital age, all while refusing to do anything about it. “When I text you, you ignore me, that’s when I call it quits/People suck, friends are the worst,” he bemoans, before proceeding to bask in his own complicity on the chorus: “‘Till then I’m scrollin’, scrollin’, scrollin’, scrollin’, scrollin’/Trapped behind the glass.” It’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s relatable, endearing and gently probing: If we allow ourselves to submit to these urges, is it really that bad? “Bitch I love being fake, I like being rude,” Dave spits. Apparently not.
