When Canada’s Fuck the Facts dubbed themselves “bastardised grindcore” all those years ago (the project’s been kicking around since 1999), they weren’t kidding. Their formidable discography is speckled with blips and bursts of every shade of extreme metal, hardcore, punk, and noise imaginable, spearheaded by vocalist Mel Mongeon’s razor-edged larynx and mastermind Topon Das’ mad fretboard genius. They’re self-releasing the Amer EP on June 18, and judging by the album’s over-the-top intensity and oddball songwriting, this foray into the unknown has done them some good. “Jour de souffrance” is a schizophrenic hybrid of sludgy hardcore and guttural deathgrind, like Napalm Death beating the piss out of Iron Monkey.
