The first minute of Quirke's "Break a Mirrored Leg" is basically one long establishing shot. First, there's a cacophony of sounds in which it's hard to pick out and identify any single element—are those disembodied cries of beings that were once human? The buzzing hum of machinery? Is that the trickle of irradiated water in post-apocalyptic city ruins? When everything eventually clears out, all that's left is a foreboding sense of dread which accumulates until the floor suddenly drops from underneath the track. From here on out, the first track the British producer's debut EP, Acid Beth (out May 19 via Young Turks), pummels forward at whiplash-inducing speeds, slowing down to catch its breath every so often before launching back into hyperdrive.
