I like "Rude". I like its novelty, its specificity, its chintziness, its shred-worthy guitar solo, its eternal hook, its randomness, its farting synthetic horns. It is Canadian reggae without apology. When it comes on in the bodega, I can't help but linger near the expired milk. But all that said, I also can't help but sympathize with the song's apparent villain—the stubborn dad who won't let his daughter run off with a dude whose most prized possession is almost definitely a hacky sack. I don't have a daughter, but if I did, I would say no too. -=-=-=-

So if EDM genius Zedd's universe-swallowing remix changes anything, it's where our allegiances should lie. Backed by the producer's sculpted triple-rainbow blasts, Magic! leader Nasri all of a sudden sounds like a worthy hero—a guy who would elope on a mountaintop before paragliding into the sunset rather than a guy who thinks the fucking watusi is an acceptable first dance. And while this remake certainly sounds automatic, that's more a testament to Zedd's masterful understanding of pop structure than any sort of formulaic laziness—because if you think just anyone could make this song into a festival-exploding dance juggernaut, there are many, many YouTube examples proving you wrong. So finally, thanks to Zedd, we can all say yes.
