The crackle, hiss, and haunted organ oscillations that preface "The Hearse" wink clearly enough at how Portland, Ore., band Wampire come from the John Maus and Ariel Pink School of off-kilter synth pop. Their sound's heavier, with a full-band sweep, but just as orchestrated-- half-way through "The Hearse" pares down for a breathe of hovering synth ambience, before the drums kick in to stretch it wider and propel it to the finish line. Their record, Curiosity, it out in May via Polyvinyl, produced by Jake Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
