From the producer’s latest release for Dream Raw Recordings

The Viennese label Dream Raw Recordings ticks all the boxes on a “lof-fi house starter pack” checklist: small-batch releases on cassette, new age art direction, and tunes full of warm and breezy textures. It’s an of-the-moment recipe that prioritizes a comfortable mood above all. Mystery producer Charles.A.D (aka Hiroyuki Tanaka) bears the style well, offering the sunrise jam “Hot Sea.”

Tanaka likes to keep things simple—an echoing guitar loop and steady kick drum march together on a beat that’s as suitable for sipping morning coffee as it is for closing out a late-night DJ set. The song’s construction is straightforward yet thoughtful, the looping melody feels well-worn and refined. As gentle as “Hot Sea” is, Tanaka is aware that balance is necessary: the bubbling acid bass is a subtle but gritty complement to the guitar line. Charles.A.D’s greatest strength is his ability to write soft, friendly, and unfussy songs, and “Hot Sea” is cozy from start to finish.
