Pilot Light

Release Date:  2013

"Pilot Light" tells a familiar story: previously lo-fi band gets to its third album and here come the glockenspiels, the brass section and the kind of reverb meant to expand those billowed harmonies rather than obscure them. All of which can easily come off feeling either mechanical or wimpy, but on "Pilot Light" Stuart McLamb effectively takes advantage of classier studios and a bigger budget to embolden the Love Language. The latest single from Ruby Red (out July 23 via Merge) is patient but in no way timid. Powered by emotional and artistic aspiration, McLamb maxes out the drums, adds that extra nervy chord change to flex his compositional chops and allows a brief respite for a quavering lyric that encompasses "Pilot Light"'s big music/small room dichotomy: "I'm counting planets inside your eyes."
