Just when Sleater-Kinney’s new album is about to end, they break out a chorus that could close down any bar. The Center Won’t Hold, the band’s first album since their 2015 reunion No Cities to Love, pairs the beloved indie rock titans with art-pop guitar hero St. Vincent as producer. The first two singles, sleek social-media commentary “The Future Is Here” and frenetic new-wave booty call “Hurry on Home,” demonstrated the collaboration’s stylishness and range. But it’s the second-to-last track, “The Dog/The Body,” that turns out to hold the record’s biggest potential singalong. Carrie Brownstein’s winking self-deprecation (“I’m just the trick without the magic”) flits over a bare-bones guitar riff before she and Corin Tucker explode into a swaying classic-rock moment (“Baby, baby, baby, I don’t mind/Gonna go-oh, and be alone”) that should have lighters, smartphones, and drinks held aloft on tour—even if revered drummer Janet Weiss unfortunately won’t be on the road with them. Things fall apart, but Sleater-Kinney aren’t ending the night without a communal anthem that finds triumph in disconnection.
