Not much out there at this point about UK outfit Twigs, who just self-released their self-titled EP on Bandcamp yesterday. “Breathe” is a solid introduction to Twigs’ fractured electronic pop, with complex, overlapping percussive touches, frizzy glitches existing just outside the tune’s mournful melody, and a female vocal that is clear and upfront while possessing an aura of intimacy. The song is somewhat reminiscent of the hollow, cavernous production and ominous undertones of Tricky’s classic debut, Maxinquaye and the accompanying video, which features a woman destroying a car with a hammer, goes further to suggest that there’s something darker lying under the surface of Twigs’ music.
