How does trauma affect someone long term? It shapes, it warps. It stays with them. On their new single, the Brighton trio Fear of Men give form to hurt’s lasting spell. Lead singer Jessica Weiss sings of the pain she feels from a relationship gone awry and immediately asserts that she will “rise above.” Yet as the song progresses its clear there’s a lasting effect. Weiss’ stoic delivery masks increasingly darker lines: “I’m a force to fear,” she sings, “You’re a void to be filled.” Fear of Men have shed their indie pop past almost entirely here, instead using atmospheric synths that shift from melodic to eerie on a dime. Coupled with its incessant snare-pounding, “Trauma” contains a clear and constant tension that never wavers. Fear of Men have made something rawer than they ever have before, now unafraid to look at the harsher and ultimately more honest parts of themselves.
