Landlady often sound like they are flexing their muscles in preparation for some world-clobbering picaresque indie rock musical they're working on. Their music is tuneful and wry and melodic and ambitious and seems to be gesturing towards rafters that only they see.  Like Matthew E. White, Schatz writes from then grip of a clear Randy Newman obsession: The wryly personal lyrics, the fixation on mortality—"I think I see my hair is turning grey/ The original will try to stay/ I wonder if I'll ever have a home," he sings in the second verse. The song has a fascinatingly shifting core, the rhythms and meter and arrangement constantly fidgeting into new shapes as Schatz chants a big bright hook: "What am I supposed to do about it? Dying day." It's an agreeable Sudoku puzzle of a rock song, one that is eager to show you how simultaneously friendly and riddling it can be.
