Pop tends to treat crushes as featherweight things, a gently insistent beseeching that hits like powdered sugar on the breeze—at most, "I really, really like you." But on the lead single from Dilly Dally's debut, Sore, Katie Monks gives the concept its soul-flattening weight, singing about a cosmic girl who sets her heart aflame in the kind of animal moan that usually consummates such matters. It's often a bad sign when you hear a band cite the Libertines as an influence—cue Dickensian waif aesthetic, dull narcotic evangelizing—but noted fan Monks taps Pete Doherty's appealingly rotting drawl, while the rest of her Toronto cohort ply a sodden Breeders-worthy riff that slopes along as if skating figure-eights in thick mud. "Desire" is a lustful, exhilarating swamp; Dilly Dally know it's not always pretty when love is overtaking you.
