Cardi sounds at home crooning in Spanish alongside Ozuna

Cardi B’s relentless assault on the music industry in 2017—an unstoppable No. 1 hit, Grammy noms, an SNL impersonation—has been a consistent source of joy. On “La Modelo,” her new collaboration with reggaeton star Ozuna, it’s clear she’s thriving, trading bars with one of her favorite singers while bragging about new love and the diamonds that come with it. And it’s the perfect vehicle to introduce the Boricua romántico to fans not already familiar with Cardi’s Instagram karaoke sessions of Ozuna songs.

Over a dancehall-infused beat with a reggaeton soul, Cardi’s versatility is on full display; she starts by singing a sultry tag-team with Ozuna in Spanish, then effortlessly drops into her baritone English flow. The tender reggaetonero’s smoothed out alto suits Cardi’s grittier voice, and they manage to capture the bubbly giddiness of fresh love with a casual swagger. Her bars in English are merely serviceable, but she sounds at home crooning in Spanish alongside Ozuna. Cardi and Ozuna going from fan and star to equal collaborators is the stuff of fantasies, and on “La Modelo” these two are having fun, and bring enough heat to melt the coldest of hearts. Most importantly, the song highlights why Cardi is so important to pop this year: Her bilingual, pan-Caribbean aesthetic represents a modern depiction of Latinidad, and proves its mainstream appeal.
