From the L.A.-based ambient artist’s latest album, My Dad the Painter–No Not That Kind of Painter (Just Another L.A. Story)

One of life’s simple pleasures is putting your ear up against the cavity of a conch shell—hearing the sounds of the ocean and imagining you’re floating in the middle of the water. That feeling is engrained in Sun An’s track “First Wave FM.” Taken from the L.A.-based ambient artist’s most recent release, My Dad the Painter–No Not That Kind of Painter (Just Another L.A. Story), it perfectly recreates the pocket universe a conch shell can make.

The first seconds of the song instantly conjure a beachside hang, the sounds of waves crawling up towards the beach. A minute in, the song takes you from the sandy shoreline and dips you straight into the water with a warbling deep-sea echo, the chirps of aquatic creatures, and bubbles popping. A little later, the song comes back up for air and it mimics that slow, syrupy experience of swimming to the surface. In the end, it’s not only really relaxing, it’s restorative. “First Wave FM” activates your brain in the best way an ambient song can. It’s not just chill: It ferries you gently from your mundane routine to a special place far away.
