On first listen, “Use Ya Mnd” seems like an ironic title for Ringgo Ancheta’s (a.k.a. Mndsgn) latest single. The track is viscerally chill. Its tumbling bassline, vintage synth melodies, and splashes of Rhodes piano seem better suited to meditation than pointed analysis. And when the Stones Throw signee emerges from behind the keys, he sings the kind of hooks you might catch yourself murmuring on the subway. Ancheta and his Klipmode crew have spent years mastering idiosyncratic bedroom jazz/electronica, and “Use Ya Mnd” is the work of a beatmaker who can flaunt his skills without disturbing the groove. In case the beautiful textures, complex chords, and swinging rhythms aren’t enough to convince you, the minute-long piano freakout is there for good measure. Music this hazy tends to dissipate when it’s held to the light. While you don’t need your mind to enjoy “Twentyfourseven,” the more attention you give it, the more depth it reveals.
