Anyone who thinks regionalism in rap is dead might reevaluate after hearing “WhatYo City Like,” the delirious lead single from Tee Grizzley and Lil Durk’s joint mixtape Bloodas. Here, the two Midwest street rappers go bar-for-bar over a mournful organ and hard-hitting drums, trying to one-up each other’s boasts about whose city is harder, Detroit or Chicago. “My city, it changed the culture,” Durk raps breathlessly before adding, “I’m from the city of Hoover,” a reference to Larry Hoover, founder of the notorious Chicago street gang the Gangster Disciples. “I’m from the city of Kwame,” Grizzley snaps back, name-checking the scandalous former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, whose legend includes a possibly apocryphal stripper-filled party at his mansion. After an intense back-and-forth, the two rappers cop to the fact that their cities have plenty in common and offer to play host to one another. “What Yo City Like” finds two of rap’s most hard-nosed young stars at the top of their game, glad to have finally met a match.
