It’s taken only six months for Octavian to take UK rap by storm. Just three singles deep, the south London rapper’s music has already moved in and out of house, rap, and grime without losing an iota of balance. His breakout, “Party Here” was a bright, futuristic pop introduction, and its follow-ups, the menacing “100 Degrees” and the reflective “Hands,” made clear his versatility.

His new single “Little” leans slightly away from that genre exploration, honing in on a fast-paced trap beat that sounds more conventional than any of his previous tracks. This time around however, his vocals are the centerpiece, and he owns this with gusto. Over funneling synths and warbling sirens, Octavian reflects on his newfound fame, dodging the advances of haters-turned-fans with a crisp hook: “They used to cut, used to diss, used to fight, now they ask me how I feel.” From the start, his restless and raspy delivery remains gripping as it moves in and out of flows and moods: Starting in a syrupy, Auto-Tune, he cranks up the speed until it seems unmanageable, hitting the brakes at the perfect moment. His performance is like that of a magician spinning plates, never losing focus or going off-track. With “Little,” Octavian proves to be a dynamic MC adaptable to any musical and lyrical condition.
