West Coast mischievist trio the Samps have ties to Ariel Pink’s sound universe; Cole MGN was a member of Haunted Graffiti and produced last year’s Mature Themes, while Darrah’s Gloriette label reissued two entries in the hallowed Haunted Graffiti series, FF>> and Loverboy. So it’s not much of a surprise that they share the man’s trash compactor-like approach to appropriating music history.

Whereas previous EPs were constructed solely out of obscure samples, they infuse a touch more live keyboards, canned drums and instrumentation into their new single, “Plans.” Dense and hazy, with nods to boogie, modern soul, cheesy soft rock, early hip-hop and lite jazz-noodling, the track randomly accesses lost music, wandering far and wide in its four minutes.
