Chelsea Wolfe followed up 2011's tar-black guitar-driven breakthrough Apokalypsis with last year's haunting collection of acoustic missives, Unknown Rooms. On both releases, Wolfe showcased her chilly, November howl, a sensually breathy voice that's blunted with cold edges and almost ethereally fragile. On “The Warden”, the first single from her new album Pain is Beauty (out September 3 via Sargent House), Wolfe uses that voice to take control of an eerie, furioursly picking acoustic riff, along with a synthesizer/drum machine pairing, to push the quiet industrial undercurrents of her earlier work to the forefront. The result is a palpably doom-drenched dirge that sounds and feels breathless.
