Whence the house-pop androgyne Shamir? Biographical materials say Las Vegas, but what is Las Vegas? A dream America had about America, a mirage of dollar bills and overdevelopment somewhere near California. Fitting origins for his music, which has the tweaked soul of a knock-off purse, realer than the real thing because you can see all its crooked stitching. Another track from his forthcoming Northside EP, “I Know It’s a Good Thing” trades up the bruising house of “If It Wasn’t True” in favor of something more mid-tempo and funk-oriented, with a touch of haunted-house vocals a la the Knife. “Sprinkler” to it. “Roll the dice.” “Reel the fish.” Listen and let all the weird little hooks tumble out like loose change.
