On “Strange Insistence,” the first cut from Gun Outfit’s upcoming album Out of Range, co-founder and singer Dylan Sharp details new, worldly exploits and and their euphoric effects: the ease of opioids, the lift of speed, the riches of cocaine. Warped, warm, and hollow, between a burned-out monotone and a jumpy quaver, his voice bears all of this experience, suggesting a modern Merle Haggard or Terry Allen. But even as he channels these fellow country outlaws, travelers who favored insight to innocence, he confesses regrets, too. “So confused at the beginning/Grown accustomed toward the end,” he admits. “But there’s a mountain in the middle/Where do you think I’ve been?” This comes with a wink and a nod, an invitation to join him on high. In tandem, he and Carrie Keith fashion a web of briars with their guitars, their low-key psychedelic lines perfectly warped into complementary tangles, tapping a vein of cosmic country gold until the sun finally sets. That’s a drug that Sharp never mentions, but is written into every moment of this great little dispatch.
