The first single from Azekel’s forthcoming Circa EP is a gauzy and glitch-ridden R&B ballad full of familiar details: “Be Mine ‘03” is simultaneously airy and urgent, with vocals that reminisce of a mistier take on the Weeknd’s bruised tenor. The ambient playground noises that co-producer Blacksmif laces on the intro also call back to Dev Hynes' inserted party chatter on Solange’s “Losing You”. "Be Mine ‘03” is simultaneously aqueous and intergalactic, full of gooey synth lines, syncopated rhythms, and fuzzy, dubby sounds that don’t detract from Azekel’s velvety vocals, a silky-smooth delivery that nicely contrasts with its densely-packed surroundings. “Be Mine ‘03” never settles into one rhythm, and that’s what makes it interesting: with so many textures melding and warping together, the song pulses forward on its own amalgam of sound, giving the listener a reason to pay attention.
