This just keeps getting better and better. Hi Scores is Boards of Canada's second digitally released EP and release as a whole, and by now, their sound is already so distinct and addictive, I cannot get enough. I have listened to this about 5 times now and it never gets old, so that must really say a lot in itself. The title track 'Hi Scores' tickles my brain when listening in headphones in a unique way that feels like my brain is being shaken in and out of place repeatedly and I love it. It's so very much ahead of its time in terms of the downtempo/ever-growing IDM scene, and that certainly applies for the rest of the EP too. BOC are no strangers to a punchy, chopped and slowed down break and while artists like Leftfield were applying this formula to nasty, sound-system rumbling tunes, Boards of Canada were taking this idea and flipping it on its' head completely. This lead to something so distinct that is almost Lo-Fi, with significant tracks like 'Turquoise Hexagon Sun' and 'Everything You Do Is a Balloon' being something I would happily put on and study to. Now, take everything I just said in the last paragraph and forget about it completely for the time being, as I want spend a bit of time talking about 'June 9th'; my favourite track on this record and my favourite Boards of Canada song full-stop. It's genius. It's simply extraordinary. It feels dirty, with a dirty acid bass-line, and dirty screwed about drums, but at the same time, so freaking melodic.. like ughhh. There are so many little motifs that switch from one tonality to another so seamlessly that really once all put together make for a composition that is beyond perfectly and meticulously crafted. It's such a shame how I would have given this almost-perfect EP 10 stars, but the track 'Nlogax' feels so out of place and just.. bland. That's all I have to say about that really. After listening to it the first time I just skip it every re-listen, which really does suck but that's unfortunately my opinion and it still stands upon my now 6th listen.
