Marty Balin was apart of Jefferson Airplane in his early career and his talent shined through the era defining Project of what is called ‘Surrealistic Pillow’. After that album. Huge ego fights happened in the band (from what I heard was not his fault.) Causing Marty Balin to be kicked out and go solo for a chunk of his career: this was what came out of it. Balin is a very heartbreak yet for some strange reason uplifting project? With tracks like ‘You Left Your Mark On Me’, ‘Elvis and Marylin’ and the juggernaut of the project: ‘Hearts’ (of course the most popular song is track one, classic 80s marketing to put the obvious radio hit up top). But yet there is this underlying confidence with tracks like ‘Spot Light’ and ‘Tell Me More’ that are polarizing from the meat and potatoes of what I thought was a heart break album? Honestly I don’t mind it. It’s a good blend of both and keeps the project fresh. The entire project is consistent but yet unique in multiple styles of genres from Rock, Pop, Funk, RnB, a rare occurrence to the time period where bands made a hit song and practically half assed the rest of the 30-40 minute project just to get the LP out there and the hit song played on the radio so people would drop money for the entire project for just the hit song. Marty Balin’s ‘Hearts’ is a great song, but quite interesting of how the rest of the album is quite consistent beside it, not as great, but not lazy at all. In my words for project, a great early 80s album for how the time period was with music.
