If you caught Deafheaven on tour last summer, you may have heard L.A. band Marriages, the opening act who fused the grating intensity of post-rock, psych, and metal with an occasional ethereal vocal. The group's singer and guitarist Emma Ruth Rundle also plays in instrumental post-rock band Red Sparowes; leads the "folkgaze" project, Nocturnes; and keeps a Bandcamp of solo ambient drone pieces. Rundle's next album, Some Heavy Ocean, is out May 20 on Sargent House and sounds to be her most realized effort. "Arms I Know So Well" captures the grandeur of her textured post-rock endeavors mixed with gorgeous, atmospheric folk. (Rundle has called Emmylou Harris' 1985 record Wrecking Ball a favorite, and the influence is audible.) The epic tapestry pries open a downcast cloud of sad strums; it sounds like catharsis. "Deliver me from all the evil I do to myself," Rundle sings, tapping into a sort of old-souled wisdom, conjuring the vastness of a sea.
