The sound of wonder lurches to life for L.A. sound editor-turned-sound manipulator Katie Gately. A chorus of pitched-up-and-down “oohs” whirls around like a dervish with no certain center. It’s a startling sound—sparkling, raucous, and childlike—especially as it comes from the Tri Angle roster, known more for darker and distilled tones. Gately sings with great affect (she stretches a mundane word-like “here” into something that buzzes like a shenai) and with electronic effects that can echo ‎the Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson, hiding the pop hooks otherwise embedded here. So make out the promise of “I will dream of you…” but not quite the lines that follow. Instead of trying to pin down something exact in Gately’s music, you can just get carried away by the drunken mariachi horns and the wordless joys that fly like bats around the whole thing.
