I first became aware of Suki Waterhouse more because of her connection to Robert Pattinson, whose acting I’ve been a fan of for years, than through her music. So going into Loveland, I was definitely curious to finally give her a proper listen as an artist in her own right. What surprised me is how much I enjoyed this album. Loveland has this dreamy, nostalgic, slightly hazy quality that feels very Suki without trying too hard to be anything other than what it is. There’s a romantic and intimate feeling throughout the record, but it still has enough pop sensibility to keep it from becoming too sleepy. Tracks like “Back in Love,” “Seasons,” “Teardrops,” and “Weirdo” were some of the ones that stood out to me the most. I’m still getting familiar with Suki’s music, so I wouldn’t pretend this album suddenly made me a longtime fan, but it definitely made me interested in exploring more of her catalog. Loveland feels like a record made by someone who knows exactly what kind of atmosphere and emotion they want to create. I came in knowing Suki primarily because of Robert Pattinson, but I’m leaving this album knowing her a little more as Suki Waterhouse, the musician.
