Tuamie and Koncept Jack$on’s new Emergency Raps, Vol. 3 is a no-frills mixtape with plenty of throwback grit. Tuamie’s simple, soulful productions do the emotional heavy lifting, while Koncept raps in a tangle of internal rhymes and stream-of-consciousness images that’s delightful to unpack. Emergency Raps opener “Stokley Wit Me” is a potent showcase for the Virginia-based duo’s dynamic. After a dusty sample—a schmaltzy R&B instrumental—short circuits and drops out, Tuamie sets the stage with a loop of a yearning female voice. Those chants slowly underscore Koncept’s restlessness as he packs in an impressive number of vivid, if disjointed, scenes into his compact, two-minute verse: From storming an A&R office in nothing but “Coogi and Phat Farm” to bleaker scenes (“Keys compressed on the desk/Overdose seizure deaths”), Koncept proves he can spin a yarn. Spare as “Stokley Wit Me” is, these two have enough personality and technical skill to do plenty with a little.
