"House of Spirits," by L.A. newcomer Young & Sick, follows in the line of current artists who are writing dark, slow and twisted R&B songs. The song oozes the type of sensuality scraped out of the music of the Weeknd's Abel Tesfaye-- a sensuality that is intrinsic to R&B. It still aims to unsettle, though, even as the song's vocalist sings of undying devotion: "My soul waited lives for you/ My love, I'll die for you, it's nothing." Then, that emotion is flipped, in the form of souls haunting ex-lovers: "I don't blame you for drowning me / And I'm glad you're in the car with me." Hate bubbles under, not over, and it's massaged by gummy synths, plaintive clicks, and airy sighs.
