If "Ballad of the Golden Hour" is any indication, Widowspeak are scaling up their ambitions for Almanac, their second LP on Captured Tracks (out January 22). Lead singer's Molly Hamilton's lilting, moon-dark sighs form perfect little smoke rings through the texture of the song's strummed acoustic and electric guitars, capturing a melancholia that recalls a host of '90s indie rockers-- the Spinanes, Built to Spill, and Bettie Serveert all come to mind. Like those bands, Widowspeak treat their softly lit guitars like a dreamy glucose drip, and the song's edges are so cottony that the song's subtle dynamic build and effortless dilation from chorus to verse to extended jam to unexpected coda might not hit you until the ninth or tenth listen.
