“Flee,” the closing track of Mechatok’s new EP All My Time, never quite twists into the banger that it threatens to be. The 20-year-old German producer, has been pulling back the reins on EDM in both his own tracks and his excellent, concise DJ mixes, favoring melody and emotional intensity to shape his music instead of big drops and bombast. The atmosphere on “Flee” is dewy and spacious, with bright synth melodies that layer atop each other intensely. There’s always the sense that “Flee” is building towards a big moment of release, but it never arrives. Instead, Mechatok dangles the possibility of a climax right in front of us, with samples of whooshing headwinds and colossal drum fills. With “Flee” Mechatok prefers to keep his listener at their edge of their seat, and in the process, he subverts what one can expect from a big room EDM song.
