Earlier this year Philadelphia’s Purling Hiss put out their most accessible album to date, the relatively clean-sounding Water on Mars. But they’re not hiding their lo-fi past: the band’s next release is a reissue of the super-limited, tour-only cassette Paisley Montage, which was supposedly recorded in “Various Philadelphia-area basements and men’s rooms over the course of 2007-2011.” Every sound was made by band founder Mike Polizze, and they’re all caked in fuzz and drenched in psychedelia.

Opener “Gitar Damage, Pt. 1” indulges nicely in Polizze’s preferred tropes-- heavy guitar and a simple, lurching beat-- but eventually descends into an aural madness of searing distortion, echoing voices, and dislocated finger snaps. There’s a bit of an early Ariel Pink flavor in the subsequent warped obscurity, but the dying remnants of psych that float under all the murk are pure Polizze.
