Max Eisenberg likes to mess with genres. I first saw him perform about a decade ago, when he was making absurd racket with the excellent Baltimore noise group Nautical Almanac. Since then he’s made chaotic rap in the duo  Dog Leather, homemade synth explorations as Dog Synth, and weirdo beats as DJ Dog Dick. The Life Stains, his first album under that latter moniker, is similarly all over the place, darting from cartoon electronics to surreal skits to dissonant hip-hop.

In that context, “Grease That I Got” is practically a straight-up pop tune, built around a bass line that could’ve been stolen from an R.E.M. outtake. But dizzying falsetto vocals and whirring guitars give the track a psychotic edge, recalling the dementia of R. Stevie Moore or a helium-injected Butthole Surfers. By the end, when a fiery synth pours over the track and Eisbenberg’s croon rises to meet it, “Grease That I Got” bubbles over into an intoxicating boil.
