After skulking in the shadows for much of their short existence, Brooklyn black metal troupe Yellow Eyes have quietly begun their ascent into the spotlight. Their last LP, 2013's Hammer of Night, was a brilliant introduction to the innovative young band, and the dawn of 2014 has already brought a new release from the enigmatic trio.  Their new 12" EP, The Desert Mourns, is out January 21 on Denmark's Dead Section label (co-released with the band's own Sibir imprint). "One Rock For the Wild Dog" revisits their atmospheric take on European-meets-Cascadian black metal fury, moving softly with muted chords that soon unfurl into a sonic maelstrom. Vicious tremolo riffs and bleak harmonies are embedded into a suffocating, densely warped production, rife with choked howls and purposeful, varied drumming that stills allows a certain luminosity to shine through.
