Until now, Allan Kingdom’s sound has largely reflected his Minneapolis surroundings: lyrics exactingly enunciated over cold, moody production. “Know About It,” the first single from his forthcoming album LINES, finds the rapper in a very different setting: breezy, mid-tempo, pop.

“I’ve been faded all night long/In my lane, making plays on my iPhone,” Kingdom croons on the half-sung-half-rapped hook. “Know About It” swerves into Drake’s lane with warm, “Controlla”-esque synths and a faint trace of dancehall in the beat from FNZ and Ronny J. Still, the self-professed “6 God” has rarely sounded this carefree and self-assured. “Know About It” is about as sunny and easygoing as pop songs get: “You don’t know about it?/Maybe you should know about it?” Kingdom drawls, sure of his come-up even if you aren’t.
